Eyelid surgery in Bogota

Blepharoplasty is a surgical technique to remove excess fat, skin and muscle that forms above and below the eyes. It is a facial surgery that can correct eye bags, dark circles and drooping eyelids, which give the face an appearance of tiredness and aging.

Laser blepharoplasty is a procedure that requires knowledge and extensive training. Dr. Carlos Rivera is a plastic surgeon in Colombia pioneer in this novel surgery. Its most notable and important difference with conventional blepharoplasty is that by making the cut with the laser instead of with the scalpel, bleeding and trauma to the tissues are minimized. This translates for patients into a postoperative period with less swelling, less discomfort and a much faster return to normal life.

Laser blepharoplasty is for those people who have excess skin in the upper or lower eyelids associated or not with fat bags and that make the look look aged and tired. It is not the ideal procedure for pigmented skin (dark circles) or fine wrinkles caused by solar aging, as well as wrinkles caused by facial mimicry and that are handled with other means such as botulinum toxin or laser resurfacing.

To perform laser blepharoplasty, a previous marking of the excess skin and the possible presence of fat bags is performed. Under anesthesia, incisions are made that are hidden within the crease of the upper eyelids or under the eyelash line in the lower eyelids. We proceed to remove the excess skin and fat bags if any, checking that there is no bleeding, to finally make a suture with material that is removed about three to five postoperative days

The location of the laser blepharoplasty scar is the same as conventional blepharoplasty surgery because the technique is the same, therefore, the scar will be located in the crease of the upper eyelid, is imperceptible and virtually invisible, when done in the lower eyelids the incision is made a millimeter below the eyelashes and is not noticeable. Ultraviolet rays can cause inflammation and stains on the skin, so exposure should be limited for at least two months after surgery to avoid affecting the healing process.

The eyelid surgery with laser compared to the conventional one has a better favorability in terms of pain, since it is reduced by 50% or more, since the laser makes the inflammation less and the procedure more bearable for the patient.

On average, laser blepharoplasty surgery lasts one hour.

It is performed under general anesthesia but in cases where only the nasal tip is approached, local anesthesia plus sedation is used.

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia controlled or assisted by the anesthesiologist (under sedation) or general anesthesia. All this according to the pre-anesthetic assessment with the patient where the most appropriate anesthesia for the patient will be defined.

Disability time is 3 to 5 days. Activities without effort and inside the house can be performed after 48 hours. To resume activities outside the house it is recommended to wait 7 to 10 days. For intense physical activities it is recommended between 3 weeks and a month.

For foreign patients the surgeon must make recommendations on the recovery time that entail stay within the city since for patient safety is requested that the patient must be at least 3 days before the scheduled date for surgery in order to take prophylaxis or preventive measures with the plastic surgeon and the anesthesiologist since the safety protocol indicates that if the patient comes from a trip of 6 or more hours, he/she must wait 72 hours to be operated on, The patient must wait 72 hours to undergo surgery, since staying still in the plane for a long time affects the circulation, and the risk of thromboembolism during the operation is higher. This simple preventive measure greatly reduces the number of complications. This prevention is advisable for those who come from Europe, West Coast of the United States, New York, Canada, Argentina or Chile, those who come from Miami, the wait is reduced to 48 hours. Once the patient has undergone surgery, the ideal is that he/she should not travel before 10 days since travelers with facial procedures may have irritation in the eyes due to the inability to close them properly. Vision may be impaired due to dry eyes, which can lead to limitations in proper and quick positioning within the aircraft. These symptoms, along with the normal anxiety that accompanies the travel itinerary, make it advisable to fly after the facial swelling caused by the surgical condition. Approximately 7 days after surgery, the patient has reduced the swelling and ecchymosis (bruising) and has begun the healing process. For this reason, it is advisable to fly after blepharoplasty surgery for 7 to 10 days.

After the surgery it is recommended to use cold compresses during the first three days, wear dark glasses until the stitches are removed, in case you feel dryness use artificial tears, avoid activities that require physical effort during the first three postoperative days, use warm compresses after the third postoperative day, avoid the use of contact lenses until the stitches are removed and do not expose yourself to direct sunlight during the first postoperative month. Also remember that it is essential to attend punctually to your postoperative controls with the surgeon and take your medications as prescribed by your doctor.
